Project Details
Name: Canasta
Designer: Emiliano Godoy
Year: 2008
Materials: Glass
Dimensions: 30 x 30 x 30 cm
Status: IN PRODUCTION by Nouvel Studio in Mexico City

The Canasta (basket) is fruit bowl shaped from a sphere with two cuts that create a handle on the top from which you can carry the object.

Nouvel has a large investment in molds that are no longer in use. We are currently recovering these molds and designing new pieces through different secondary processes. Old molds, and the glass blowers’ experience with them, gain new life without the expense or environmental impact of manufacturing new molds.

The selected mold for this piece was a sphere, 30cm in diameter. Through two straight cuts after the sphere is blown and tempered, a handle is created that gives the piece its character.

These two cuts can be placed in any position around the axis of the sphere, thus allowing for any defects to be cut off from the final piece. Small bubbles, streaks or scratches are normal in the glass-blowing process, and through this secondary processes the reject-rate is lowered drastically.
