In an effort to define and promote the capabilities of Maplex, we experimented with fabrication processes, environmentally friendly coatings and glues, as well as new combinations of existing machining and transformation techniques. How-to guides were written to help designers and architects understand the capabilities of the material. Documentation was also generated to prepare Maplex for LEED credits certification.
Maplex is a next generation material made from 100% wood fibers and zero binders. Therefore, it is 100% biodegradable and recyclable. It can be formed using a variety of processes, and it readily accepts paints, dyes, stains and many adhesives. We worked in several pieces that demonstrate the surprising strength and formability of the material.
The prototypes developed include furniture, lighting, wall surfaces, displays, exhibits and consumer products. The project was exhibited at the 2005 and 2006 International Contemporary Furniture Fair (ICFF) in New York City.
